Tried ultrasonic cleaning on a shifter cluster and it came out worse than before...

Two cents here, but I've seen guys freak out over a slightly cloudy finish that wiped right off with a microfiber. 32khz cleaner at 130F for 10 minutes is usually my max on shifters, anything past that and you're asking for trouble. Your mileage may vary but I've pulled cleaner results just hitting things with brake cleaner and a soft brush.
