Switched my shop from guessing spoke tension by feel to a cheap tension meter, and wheel comebacks went way down
I used to build wheels the old way, squeezing spokes and plucking them like a guitar, and I thought I had a good ear for it. After 3 months of getting 4 or 5 wheels back with loose spokes, I grabbed a $60 tension meter and figured out I was running the drive side way under spec the whole time. First wheel I did with it felt stiff in my hands but stayed true for a whole season of a guy's gravel riding. Now I check every spoke and log the numbers, takes me maybe 5 extra minutes per wheel. Anyone else find their hands were lying to them once they actually measured?
