Overheard a customer at the shop say something that stuck with me
Guy was telling his friend he never cleans his chain because 'oil just attracts more dirt.' I watched him walk out with a new drivetrain three weeks ago. How do you handle customers who think maintenance is a scam?

Show them the actual cost difference, like pulling up a $15 chain vs a $200 groupset on your phone right there. Most people change their tune when they see the math laid out in front of them.

Has anyone ever tried explaining chain maintenance to someone who thinks WD-40 fixes everything? A guy came into my shop last winter complaining his bike sounded like a dying cat. Turns out he'd been spraying WD-40 on his chain every week and wondered why it was bone dry and rusted. I showed him the little ball bearings falling out of his cassette and he still argued that 'lubricant is a gimmick.' Bought a whole new groupset three days later though. Funny how replacing parts is fine but basic upkeep is where people draw the line.
