Dropped $180 on a Park Tool wheel truing stand and I still say the cheap one was fine
Every old timer at the shop in Boise told me I was wasting my time with a $40 stand off Amazon, so I caved and bought the Park Tool one after hearing it a dozen times. Two years later I've built maybe 30 wheels on it and honestly the cheap one held tension just as well, the only real difference is the Park feels nicer to turn. Am I the only one who thinks the tool snobbery in this trade is mostly about how the tool looks on the bench rather than how the wheel comes out?

The part about "how the tool looks on the bench" got me. My old shop had a guy who would wipe down his Park stand with a rag after every wheel, like it was a motorcycle or something, and he built wheels no straighter than the kid next to him using a flipped over bike frame with a zip tie taped to the stay. The zip tie guy could true a wheel in his sleep though, he just never cared what the bench looked like.
