A retired frame builder in Portland talked me out of chasing the perfect wheel dish by feel
I was bullshitting with this old guy named Ray at his garage shop off SE Division and he laughed when I said I true wheels by ear and thumb. He pulled out a tension meter he bought in 1994 and said "your hands lie to you more than a $60 tool ever will." I fought him on it for a bit but then we checked 6 of my wheels and 4 were way off spec. Now I want to hear from folks who actually do this for money: do you trust a tension meter or is there a trick to getting it right by feel?
