Tricked a dead keyswitch back to life with a pencil eraser, but now I'm second-guessing it
Picked up a grimy old board at a flea market in Akron for $15, and about 8 keys wouldn't register at all, so I figured the switches were toast. Before ordering replacements, I tried rubbing a pencil eraser on the contact points, then hit them with a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, and 6 of the 8 keys started working again. The other 2 needed the little metal tabs bent just slightly back into place, which felt risky but paid off. Now I'm torn on whether this fix will actually hold up or if I just delayed the real repair by a month or two. Part of me says a clean contact is a clean contact and there's nothing to worry about, but the other part wonders if eraser dust or bent tabs will bite me later. I've got a guy in Dayton who swears by the eraser trick and has boards going strong after a few seasons, but I don't know if I trust one success story. What's your take, is contact cleaning a real fix or just a band-aid before a full switch swap?
