Wasted $150 on that fancy adjustable guide comb set and it couldn't even handle a good fade without snagging every five seconds.

The teeth kept catching on thick hair near the crown and left me with more rough patches than a smooth blend, has anyone found a clipper guide system that actually works for dense Irish hair?

Tbh I think you might be blaming the combs a bit too much here. The real issue with those adjustable sets is that the plastic teeth are way too thick for dense hair like ours. I tried the Wahl magnetic system once and it was even worse, the magnets kept snapping off. Honestly what worked for me was just switching to a metal guard system like the Oster metal comb set. The metal glides through thick hair way smoother and you can actually feel the heat building up less. Plus you can run a hot blade through them without worrying about melting plastic. Ngl the metal ones are a little pricier upfront but they'll last forever and won't snag on your Irish hair like that plastic crap does.

Buddy of mine from the shop had the same problem with that adjustable comb set. His hair is like a Brillo pad mixed with steel wool, stuff grows every direction. He finally broke down and got a ceramic blade clipper, said it glides through like butter compared to his old steel blade that kept heating up and tugging. Now he just uses the basic plastic combs that came with the clipper but says the blade change made all the difference.
