TIL a straight razor sharpens better if you let the lather sit for a few extra seconds

I read on a barber forum last week that letting the lather sit on the skin for 30 seconds softens the hair enough to make the blade glide cleaner, and I tried it on three clients today, the finish was noticeably smoother, anyone else notice that or is it just me?
