Pro tip: A retired barber told me to warm my clipper blades before a cut, and I was skeptical

I was talking to a guy named Frank who's been cutting hair since the 70s at a shop in Cleveland. He said cold blades snag more on coarse hair, especially in winter, and running them under hot water for 10 seconds makes a huge difference. I tried it on a client with thick salt-and-pepper hair last Tuesday, and the cut was smoother with less pulling. Has anyone else done this, or am I just buying into old barber tales?

My cousin Vinny cuts hair in Brooklyn and I used to tell him he was crazy for warming blades. I thought it was just some old school superstition passed down from the 50s. Then last month I tried it on my own beard trimmer because my skin was getting irritated from cold pulls. Man I was wrong. The difference was night and day especially on my coarse jawline hair. I texted Vinny an apology and now I do it every time before I touch a clients neck or edges.

That "night and day" difference could just be placebo, you changed your technique.
