I finally got called out for using too much product on my fades

A customer I've been cutting for like 2 years straight up told me his hair felt greasy by the end of the day. I was using a heavy pomade on every fade just to get that shine. Now I switched to a light matte paste and only use it on the top, not the sides. Has anyone else had to back off their product game after someone spoke up?

You're the one who's been cutting him for two years and he just now said something? Sounds like he's the problem, not your product. Heavy pomade on a fade is the whole point - that slick look is what separates a real barber from somebody who just buzzes heads.

Read somewhere that most guys actually prefer matte finish anyway so he might just be used to that.
