Debate: Hot towel before vs after the haircut

I tried doing hot towels before the haircut for like 6 months, then swapped to after. Before helped soften the hair but made my clogs slip around. After felt way better for the skin but clients kept saying the towel was too cold by the time I finished. I'm leaning back to before now. What do you guys do and why?

Is a hot towel after really supposed to do anything useful besides giving you extra cleanup time?

Got a buddy who goes to this old school italian barbershop where they still use straight razors and hot towels. He said one time the barber wrapped his face up and left the towel on so long he nearly fell asleep. When the guy finally took it off, his skin was all soft and the razor just glided over it like butter. Swears it made his shave last way longer before any stubble showed back up. So yeah, I guess the heat opens up your pores or something.
