Update: My friend told me I was drowning my herbs and it finally clicked

I was showing off my little basil and mint pots to a friend who actually farms, and she pointed out the yellowing leaves and said, 'You're loving them to death with that watering can.' I was watering every other day like clockwork, thinking more was better. Now I only water when the top inch of soil is bone dry, which ends up being about twice a week. The basil has perked up so much in just the last ten days. Has anyone else had to totally rethink their watering schedule for a balcony setup?

Oh man, did I ever kill a rosemary plant that way? I was so sure it needed a drink every morning, just like me with my coffee. The soil was basically mud. It took a cactus dying from my overwatering to finally get it through my head that less is more.

Ever kill a plant by being too nice? I've drowned more succulents than I care to admit.
