Unpopular opinion: I chose a single big pot of tomatoes over a bunch of small herb containers this spring.

After 3 seasons of crowded little pots, I went with one 20-inch container for a single 'Sun Gold' cherry tomato plant, and the yield has been crazy compared to my old setup, but now I miss having fresh basil right there.

But what's the point of a huge tomato harvest if you can't make a proper caprese salad with it? All those tomatoes just feel incomplete without fresh basil right there to pick. I tried the single big pot thing once and felt so silly buying basil at the store while my own plant was a mile away. The little pots might give less fruit, but they give you a whole kitchen garden right outside your door. That trade-off for a bigger tomato yield just isn't worth it to me.

You know, I always focused on getting the biggest tomato harvest possible. Your point about having basil right there for caprese makes so much sense though. I'm rethinking my whole patio setup now.
