That talk with the old lady next door changed how I water my herbs

My neighbor Carol who has been gardening on her balcony for 20 years saw me drowning my basil plant last Tuesday. She told me to stick my finger in the soil up to the second knuckle before I even think about watering. Now my rosemary and thyme are actually growing instead of just sitting there looking sad. Has anyone else had a neighbor drop some simple wisdom that totally shifted how you care for your plants?

Oh man, did your neighbor show you the finger test? That's exactly what my neighbor Frank taught me last summer, except he made me do it for every single pot I own. I mean, I used to just water everything on Sundays like clockwork and wondered why my mint was always droopy. Now I'm out there poking dirt every other day and talking to the plants like a weirdo, but they actually look happy. It's funny how something so simple can make such a big difference, right?

Started poking dirt in every pot too after learning that trick. Now I'm ankle-deep in soil half the time checking moisture levels on my succulents and herbs. It's crazy how much watering needs change once you actually pay attention instead of just guessing. My basil went from limp and sad to actually perky once I stopped drowning it on schedule. That simple finger test really does make all the difference once you get into the habit.
