That one rainy week taught me my balcony drain is a liar

After 4 days of steady drizzle in Seattle last March, my pots were floating in 2 inches of water because the drain clogged with dead leaves, and I finally figured out that a mesh bag over the outlet catches everything while still letting water through, so has anyone else had to MacGyver their balcony drainage mid-season?

The mesh bag trick is honestly genius, I had the same "balcony drain is a liar" moment last fall but I was convinced the problem was just the angle of my pots. I thought I had to clean the drain every single week or just deal with the puddles, but your post made me realize I was overcomplicating it. I grabbed a cheap mesh produce bag from the kitchen, wrapped it around the outlet, and it’s been two months now with zero flooding even after some heavy rain. I was that guy who swore by store bought drain covers, but this is way better and basically free. Dead leaves still pile up but they just sit on the mesh and I can shake them off in two seconds.
