That hotel in Barcelona made me rethink my whole balcony setup

I was visiting a friend in Barcelona last spring and every single balcony had these huge clay pots with citrus trees growing in them, even on tiny 3-foot wide ledges. They looked so natural and heavy, not like the plastic nonsense I've been using on my apartment balcony here. Anyone know if those big clay pots are worth the hassle for small spaces or am I just romanticizing a vacation memory?

Are you talking about those massive terracotta ones, like the kind that weigh a ton even before you put dirt in them? I totally get the romanticizing thing, because I did the exact same thing after a trip to Italy and bought two of them for my tiny balcony. They are honestly a pain to move around, especially if you're renting and might have to haul them up a few flights of stairs, but they keep the soil temperature way more stable than plastic pots in my experience. Just be careful with the weight on your balcony floor, especially if it's an old building or a wooden deck, because they can get surprisingly heavy when they're full of wet dirt.
