Stop watering your balcony herbs every day, they hate it

I killed three basil plants in a row before figuring out that daily watering was drowning the roots. Now I only water when the top inch of soil feels dry, usually every 2 or 3 days in my south-facing spot. Has anyone else had the same problem with herbs getting yellow leaves from too much love?

Three basil plants is basically the plant version of the starter marriage. You learned the hard way that love spells death when it comes to watering.
