Spent $60 on a self-watering planter box last spring, it either saved my tomatoes or made them rot

I got one of those sub-irrigation planters for my balcony and my cherry tomatoes went crazy for a month, then the roots just sat in water and got mushy. Has anyone else had mixed luck with these things or did I just pick a bad brand?

It's a planter box, not rocket science. You overwatered.

Did you check if the planter has actual drainage holes or just gravel at the bottom?
