Spent $35 on a moisture meter and it saved my whole balcony, but not for the reason I thought
I bought a $35 moisture meter online after killing my third rosemary plant in a row on my Chicago balcony, and honestly it turned out my problem was never watering too little, it was watering way too much in pots that had no drainage. The meter read "wet" for almost two weeks straight at the bottom of the pot while the top felt bone dry, which blew my mind because I had been soaking everything every morning thinking they were thirsty. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has figured out a cheap way to check drainage before buying a pot, or do you just drill extra holes in everything like I'm about to?
