Spent 2 months fighting fungus gnats in my balcony herb pots

I started my little balcony garden last spring with basil, mint, and parsley in three window boxes. Everything was going great until I noticed tiny flies buzzing around every time I watered. I figured it was just a fluke and they would go away on their own. Six weeks later I had gnats in every single pot and my basil was starting to droop. I tried cinnamon, let the soil dry out completely, even covered the dirt with pebbles. Nothing worked until I bought those yellow sticky traps and mosquito dunk bits. It took a full 2 months from start to finish to get rid of them all. Has anyone else dealt with a gnat infestation that just would not quit?

The mosquito dunk bits are the REAL game changer, but did you let them soak long enough before watering? I've seen people just toss them on top of the soil and wonder why nothing happens. How long did you actually soak the bits before using the water?

I heard letting the bits soak for at least 24 hours is what actually kills the larvae.
