Serious question, my 3rd floor balcony in Fresno hit 108 degrees and cooked my lettuce in one afternoon
I moved the pot behind the railing for shade and started watering at 6am instead, which kept the next batch alive through July. Has anyone had luck with shade cloth on a west-facing balcony, or should I just give up on greens until fall?
Oh man, I used to think shade cloth was a waste of money and that stubborn plants just need tough love. Then my sister gave me a 30% white cloth for my own west balcony and the difference was nuts, my chard and even the kale stopped getting that crispy burnt look. I hung it on the railing with those little clips so it blocks the 3pm to 6pm sun but still lets air move through. Now I am a total shade cloth person. Fresno heat is just a different beast, and the cloth plus your 6am watering should get you greens all summer.
