Pro tip: empty pill bottles are perfect for balcony seedlings

I started tomato and pepper seeds in old prescription bottles last spring because I ran out of pots and didn't want to buy more. Just poked drainage holes in the bottoms with a nail, filled them with potting mix, and they held moisture way better than my flimsy plastic trays. The clear bottles let me watch the roots develop before transplanting, which was a nice bonus. Has anyone else tried weird containers like yogurt cups or egg cartons, and did they work out for you?

...and honestly my whole balcony garden is basically a pharmacy display now. I tried the egg carton thing once for herbs and the cardboard just turned into a soggy mess, but the pill bottles are the real deal. I had a few extra large ones from my dad's meds, so I jammed some lettuce seeds in there too and they did great. My neighbors probably think I'm either a hoarder or running some kind of weird operation, but hey, whatever works. The clear ones are perfect though, you can literally watch the roots hit the sides and know when it's time to move them out. Just don't forget the drainage holes, learned that one the hard way after drowning a whole batch of basil.
