My tomato plant taught me how much water a balcony actually keeps

After 3 weeks of droopy leaves, I finally weighed my 5-gallon pots before and after a storm and found out the roof above my balcony sends 80% of the rain straight off the edge, so has anyone else had to rig a gutter or tarp just to keep their plants from drying out?

Same deal on my deck, the overhang channels everything to one corner and my pots on the other side stay bone dry. Had to stack a bunch of milk crates and a cheap tarp to catch the runoff and funnel it into a bucket. Works okay, but now I feel like a pirate every time it rains and I'm hauling water to the plants.

Wow, that's exactly what I dealt with, ended up angling a rain barrel spout to catch it!
