My tomato plant grew sideways after I tried a new way to tie it up

I used a soft cloth strip instead of string to guide it, and the stem actually grew a thick, woody patch where it was tied. It made the whole plant way stronger against the wind. Has anyone else seen a plant toughen up like that from a simple tie?

Did you use an old t-shirt strip?

Yeah, my old band shirt from high school finally gave out. Cut it into strips for cleaning rags last month.
