My neighbor's 40-pound sunflower got taller than my whole balcony railing

She grew it in a 5-gallon bucket facing west in July, and now I'm wondering if I've been coddling my tomatoes with morning sun and fancy fertilizer when the real trick is just letting them fight for light, has anyone else had a plant go full crazy mode after you stopped babying it?
