My mom said I was drowning my basil, and 9 dead plants later I finally believe her
Every spring I'd buy a $4 basil plant and water it every single morning out of habit. My mom kept saying the pot needed to dry out first, but I figured more water meant more growth. By July the leaves always went yellow and slimy, and I tossed plant after plant into the trash. This year I stuck my finger two inches into the soil before watering, and this one plant has been going strong since March on my south facing ledge. Anyone else kill a plant 9 times before listening to the person who was obviously correct?
Man, I feel this in my soul. I once drowned a cactus, which I'm pretty sure takes a special kind of talent since those things basically live on neglect. My roommate told me to stop watering it every other day and I acted like she was trying to sabotage me. Three dead cacti later, turns out she knew what she was talking about. The finger test changed my whole plant game too, and now I've got a pothos that's survived almost a year, which is basically a world record for me.
