My entire herb box tried to fly away in a storm last week
I was on my third floor balcony in Chicago when a sudden wind gust hit. It picked up my long plastic planter full of basil and thyme, dumping half the soil over the railing onto the sidewalk below. I had to run out in the rain, drag the soggy mess inside, and spend an hour cleaning up. Has anyone found a good way to weigh down lightweight planters without drilling holes?

Wait, did you mean to say third floor balcony? I'm in Chicago too, and my building calls that the fourth floor because of the lobby level. Anyway, for weighing planters down, I've had good luck with those flat river rocks from the garden store. You can layer a bunch in the bottom of the planter before adding soil. They add a lot of weight and help with drainage too. It's way cheaper than buying special weights, and it keeps things stable on windy days.

River rocks are a solid tip, but doesn't that take up a ton of soil space for the roots?
