My cat turned my herb garden into a salad bar yesterday
I came home from work and found my new basil plant, the one I got from the farmers market for $12, completely dug up. The soil was all over my balcony floor and the pot was on its side. My cat was sitting right next to it looking very proud. I had to replant everything and now I'm trying to figure out how to keep him out. Has anyone found a good way to protect their plants from curious pets?

That's actually so frustrating, sorry that happened! My cat did the same thing to my mint plant and it never really grew back right. Maybe try putting some citrus peels around the base, cats usually hate that smell.

Honestly your cat was doing you a favor. That basil was probably full of bugs or had some weird fungus you couldn't see. My friend's store-bought herb had spider mites, totally killed her other plants. Plus, digging is natural for them, it's like their version of a hobby. You should be glad he's getting enrichment instead of just sleeping all day. Maybe put the plant somewhere he can watch it but not touch, like a high shelf he can't reach.
