I used to think vertical planters were a gimmick...

I've got a 4x6 foot balcony in my apartment in Austin and space is always tight. For years I avoided those stacked vertical planters because I figured they'd just dry out weird or look tacky. But my neighbor Linda (she grows tomatoes on her fire escape) convinced me to try a fabric wall pocket thing she got off Amazon for like 30 bucks. I planted basil, oregano, and some curly parsley in the pockets back in April and honestly it changed my mind completely. The drainage is actually better than my regular pots and the herbs are bushier now than anything I've grown in containers before. The only catch is you gotta water more often because the fabric dries fast, but I just check it every morning with my coffee. Has anyone else tried those felt pocket planters or am I late to the party?

60 bucks a month on my water bill says those fabric pockets are a scam. I tried one of those felt things last summer and it was bone dry by noon every single day, my basil looked like a dried up weed by July. Plus the pockets sagged and leaked dirt all over my patio after a few weeks, had to hose the whole thing down twice a week. You might have gotten lucky with drainage but in this Texas heat they're just a constant job to keep alive.
