I stopped using big pots for my tomatoes on the 4th floor
Everyone says deep pots are a must, but I switched to wide, shallow planters last season and got more fruit. The roots spread out more in the sun and heat up here. Has anyone else tried this with a south-facing balcony?

My south-facing balcony in Phoenix is a furnace. I use those wide 18-inch ceramic bowls from the garden center, and my cherry tomatoes go crazy. The shallow roots stay in the warm topsoil.

That's a really smart workaround for the heat! Wide pots let the roots stay in the warmer soil layer, just like @viola171 said. One thing to watch is that shallow soil dries out super fast. It might need watering twice a day in a real heat wave. A good thick layer of mulch on top can really help keep the moisture in.
