I finally planted herbs on my balcony and an elderly neighbor lectured me about mint

She stopped me mid-watering to say I should never put mint in the ground because it takes over everything. Now I have two small pots of mint fighting for space and I wonder if she was right. Has anyone else had a neighbor give you unsolicited plant advice that actually made you think twice?

Hear her out but mint is fine in a pot.

No no no... you can't just put mint in a pot and call it a day. That stuff is pure evil once it escapes. I planted some in a little ceramic pot on my back porch a few years ago, and now I'm pretty sure it's plotting world domination from under the deck. My neighbor's yard is starting to get little mint runners popping up too... I don't even know how that's possible. Containment is a complete myth with mint, I swear it laughs at plastic barriers.
