Herbs vs flowers on a tiny balcony - which did you pick?

I have a 4x6 foot balcony that gets about 5 hours of afternoon sun. I had to choose between growing herbs like basil and mint OR going with petunias and marigolds for color. I went with herbs because I figured I could at least use them in cooking. After 2 months, the basil is doing GREAT but the mint tried to take over the whole pot. Now I'm wondering if I should have picked the flowers after all for the visual appeal. Has anyone else faced this small space choice and regretted their pick?

My friend grew mint on her balcony and it escaped the pot and climbed up the railing.

Wait, 'escaped' is kind of Dramatic for a plant. Mint doesn't run away, it just sends out runners really fast. Once it gets into the railing or cracks, it's basically there forever.
