Changed my mind about self-watering pots after my basil crisis
I used to think those self-watering containers were a gimmick, just plastic junk that would cause root rot. Last August I went on a 10 day trip to visit my sister in Phoenix and came back to a crispy basil plant, totally brown and dead. I had a neighbor watering, but she forgot twice and the balcony heat just nuked it. So I grabbed two cheap self-watering pots from the hardware store, the kind with the wick and the reservoir, and planted new basil and mint. The difference showed up in about 3 weeks, the basil doubled in size and the mint actually spread, no drooping even when I skipped refilling the tank for 4 days straight. I filled the reservoir once and it lasted the whole week, which I never would have believed before. Now I've got 5 of these pots on my rail and I'm wondering if anyone else had luck with them for tomatoes, or is that pushing it?
