Am I the only one who lost 5 weeks to a fungus gnat problem on a 4th floor balcony?
Thought bugs couldn't even reach my pots up here in Chicago, but a bag of cheap soil from the hardware store brought them in and it took five weeks to clear them out. I tried the yellow sticky traps alone for two weeks and it did nothing, then did a 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water soak on every pot and that finally broke the cycle. The thing that really got me was the larvae living in the drainage saucers, so dump those out every time or you're just feeding them. Curious if anyone here has had luck with a top dressing like sand instead of the peroxide soak.
Sand on top sounds nice but it only works if it dries out fully between waterings, and fungus gnats love damp soil, so you can end up trapping more moisture under there and making it worse. Hydrogen peroxide actually kills the larvae on contact instead of just blocking the adults from laying, which is why it broke the cycle for you. Saucer water is the real culprit either way, so dumping those is the part that matters most no matter which route you take.
