A neighbor's tomato tip saved my balcony harvest after 2 years of failures

My upstairs neighbor in Portland told me to water from the bottom with a tray and now my cherry tomatoes actually ripen instead of splitting, has anyone else tried bottom watering for windy balconies?

Bottom watering works fine until you forget the tray for one hot day, then the roots sit in stale water and you get fungus gnats everywhere. Splitting usually means inconsistent watering, not the direction it comes from.
