My chocolate cake turned into a volcano at my sister's birthday

I was baking a cake for my sister's party in my apartment kitchen, and everything was going fine until I opened the oven. The center had risen way too much and then collapsed, leaving a huge crack. It looked like a chocolate volcano. I think I messed up the baking powder amount, maybe used a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon. I was panicking because the party was in two hours. I ended up filling the crack with a ton of extra frosting and berries to hide it. It tasted okay, but the texture in the middle was really dense. Has anyone else had a cake just explode like that from too much leavener?

Ever notice how that happens with more than just cakes? Like when you add too much soap to the dishwasher and suds flood the kitchen, or overfill the gas tank and it spills everywhere. It feels like a tiny mistake gets magnified so fast. That cake volcano is just the tasty version of a little error making a huge mess.
