Fell for that expensive sourdough starter hype

I dropped $40 on some 'heirloom 100 year old' starter from Etsy and it smelled like feet after 3 feedings. My buddy's $5 local bakery starter has been going strong for 8 months now. Anyone else get burned by overpriced baking gimmicks?

Total waste of cash. That 100 year old stuff is just a marketing lie.

Stella's right about the marketing lie part, but that "smelled like feet" thing is actually a good sign at first. A healthy starter can smell funky, like feet or cheese or even vomit, especially when it's young and the bacteria balance is still shifting. The problem wasn't the starter's age, it's that a 100-year-old starter doesn't mean much if you don't keep it fed right. Your buddy's $5 one probably just had a stronger, more stable culture to begin with. Next time just grab some from a local bakery or start your own with flour and water for free. It's way less hype and more about learning how to handle it.
