That cheap bread proofer I bought off Amazon was a big mistake
I spent about $80 on this bread proofer last winter because I was tired of using my oven with a pan of hot water. It looked good in the photos and had decent reviews. But after three months the heating element started acting weird. Some days it would get way too hot and other days it wouldn't heat up at all. I lost a whole batch of sourdough when it overheated and killed my starter that was sitting in there. Customer service from the seller didn't respond to my messages either. Has anyone found a reliable proofer that won't break the bank?

Are you sure you didn't just get a dud or maybe you didn't follow the instructions right? I picked up the same cheap $80 model from Amazon like two years ago and it's been running fine for me. I use it almost daily for my bulk ferments and it holds steady at 78 degrees without any problems. Not saying your experience is invalid, but these things are usually pretty simple inside - just a heating pad and a thermostat. Could the issue be where you have it plugged in or maybe you got a bad batch of power from your outlet?
