Update: My neighbor's comment about my chickens' waterer made me change my whole setup
I was filling their metal waterer every morning in my Phoenix backyard, but she pointed out that after just two hours in the 110-degree sun, the water was too hot for them to drink, which is why my egg production dropped last July.

Remember that metal heats up fast, but the water itself is the real problem. In my experience, even a plastic waterer will get too hot if it sits in full sun. The key is to put the water in full shade all day, or at least use something insulated. I had to move my waterer three times to find a spot that stays shaded from morning to night.

Graywright is right about the shade, but you need to check the water temp yourself in the afternoon. I use a cheap foam cooler for my waterer now, it keeps it cool enough to actually drink.
