Unpopular opinion: Roosters are worth the noise for a small flock

I was at the local feed store last spring and this guy starts lecturing me about how roosters are nothing but trouble. He said they fight, they crow at 4 AM, and they stress out the hens. I just nodded along but inside I was thinking about my own rooster, Rusty. He saved my whole flock from a hawk attack last summer by sounding the alarm and running straight at it. That guy at the store probably never even had a rooster, just repeated what he heard. My hens are calmer with him around and he actually breaks up fights between them. Has anyone else had a rooster that proved the haters wrong?

My buddy had a rooster named Colonel that literally jumped a raccoon that got into his coop. Thing had the raccoon running for its life while the hens just watched from the roost like it was a show.
