TIL my chickens hate the new feeder I built last weekend

I spent all Sunday building a nice wooden feeder with a PVC pipe system from a YouTube video. Came out Monday morning and they'd rather scratch through the mud for bugs than touch it. Has anyone else had birds act picky with a new setup?

Did you try putting some of their old food in the new feeder to trick them?

Have you seen that video where a guy put his old shirt in the new cat bed to get them to use it, @barbara967? I read somewhere that mixing their scent with new stuff can help, so the food trick probably works the same way. Maybe try rubbing the old food container all over the new feeder first, or even leave a little bit of the old food right on top of the new stuff. A friend of mine swore by using a pinch of catnip in the new bowl too, just to make it extra interesting for them.
