That $10 solar waterer I bought off Amazon froze solid in 12 hours last week.

Had to chisel the ice out with a screwdriver at 6am in 15 degree weather, has anyone found a solar setup that actually works in real winter?

$10 solar waterer froze solid in 12 hours - yeah no surprise there. Those little ones with the cheap solar panels are basically toys. I've seen guys get decent results with the big rubbermaid tubs and a standalone 20 watt panel hooked to a low wattage heater. You gotta spend like 60-80 bucks minimum and bury the water line deeper than you think you need.

You know, I used to be the guy buying those cheap solar waterers and wondering why they'd crap out after one night. But "basically toys" is exactly right, @hart.taylor, and I'm kicking myself for not realizing it sooner. That Rubbermaid tub setup you mentioned is interesting, I've seen a buddy do something similar and it held up way better than any of the little plastic junk I've tried. Burying the line deeper is a good point too, I think people (including me) always underestimate how far the frost line actually goes. Definitely rethinking my whole setup now, glad you shared that.
