Serious question, did anyone else waste cash on a fancy coop heater that barely does anything?
I grabbed a 200 watt radiant heater for my coop back in early December for $75, and I wish I had just kept my money. My four hens were fine with the deep bedding method and a wind block, even when it hit 18 degrees outside in Fort Collins. The heater tripped my garage GFCI twice and only warmed the roost bar area by maybe 5 degrees according to my cheap thermometer. I ended up selling it to a neighbor for $30, so I ate $45 plus a Saturday afternoon messing with extension cords. What convinced me was reading that hens handle cold way better than drafts, and my girls actually seemed calmer once I pulled the thing out. Has anyone here had luck with just a heated water base instead, or is that also a waste?
