PSA: I was using way too much oyster shell in my flock's feed for a year.

A vet in Boise pointed out the excess calcium after one of my hens had a weird, chalky dropping. How do you all handle calcium supplements?

My cousin in Spokane had a vet warn her about this last fall. She was mixing it right into the feed too. I read on a backyard chicken forum that too much calcium can actually block other minerals from being absorbed. Now I keep a small dish of crushed eggshells out for them, and they only take it when they need it. It seems to work better than guessing the amount.

Totally did the same thing. Switched to just free-choice oyster shell in a separate dish.
