My neighbor swears by deep litter but my coop smelled like a wet dog for 3 weeks
My neighbor Dale has run deep litter in his coop over on Maple Street for 2 years, and last month he convinced me to ditch my weekly scoop and just keep adding pine shavings on top. By day 12 the coop had a sour smell I could catch from the driveway, and when I finally dug in with a pitchfork I found a soggy matted layer about 5 inches down that never dried out. Is it just too humid here in late spring for this method to work, or am I missing something about how deep the litter actually needs to be?
