My neighbor in Bakersfield gave me 3 chicks from her broody hen and one turned out to be a rooster
About 5 months back my next door neighbor in Bakersfield had a broody hen sitting on 7 eggs and she gave me 3 of the chicks once they hatched. I raised them in a plastic tote in my garage for 6 weeks and by week 12 the biggest one started crowing at 5am, so I had to rehome him to a farm out on Rosedale Highway. Now I check for saddle feathers and pointed hackles by week 6 instead of waiting, has anyone else gotten surprised by a free chick turning out to be a roo?
