My hens laid 14 eggs yesterday and I almost missed it because of fake nesting boxes from Amazon
I read on the University of Georgia poultry site that hens prefer darker, enclosed spaces to lay eggs. Those open wire nesting boxes I bought let in too much light, so my girls were hiding eggs under the coop instead. Swapped to an old milk crate with a curtain and now I find them all. Anybody else notice their chickens ditching the fancy boxes?

Fancy boxes just fool us, not the chickens.

Heard a chicken farmer on a podcast saying the same thing basically. They did a test where half the hens got a super expensive coop with fancy roosts and the other half just got a basic wooden box with some straw. Guess what? Egg production was exactly the same. The fancy one just made the human feel better. @val_wilson you're totally right that these companies are selling to us, not the birds. Chickens just want to be safe, dry, and have room to scratch around.
