I saw a hawk circling my run and realized my mistake

I was watching from my kitchen window in Boise and saw it eyeing my girls. I had left a big open space in the middle of the run with no cover. Has anyone else added a simple overhead net or string grid that worked well?

We lost two bantams last summer to a Cooper's hawk in my backyard. I mean, it was brutal. I ended up putting up a cheap plastic net from the hardware store over the whole run. It's not pretty, but it works. You just have to make sure it's tight so it doesn't sag and trap them.

Honestly, I used to think those nets were a waste of time. I figured if a hawk wanted in, it would just tear right through. But hearing you lost two bantams like that, and the net worked, it really changed my mind. I guess the cheap stuff actually does the job if you put it up right. Makes me feel dumb for not trying it sooner.
