I finally got why my older hens stopped laying in July
Last week my neighbor Carol came over to borrow some feed and saw my empty nesting boxes. She asked when I last checked the run for shade. I told her the coop has a roof but the run gets full sun all afternoon. She said her girls drop production every summer because they get too hot to bother. I moved their water to the shady corner and hung an old sheet over the west side. Three days later I got 4 eggs from 6 hens. Has anyone else noticed a big jump just from adding shade alone?

Shade might help a little but plenty of hens slow down in July no matter what you do, that's just the heat and shorter days catching up before molt. Four eggs could easily be a fluke from a few days of cooler weather, so don't go thinking one sheet fixed the whole problem.
