Can we talk about how long it took me to stop my girls from roosting on the coop roof...

I spent three months trying to break my hens of roosting outside on top of the coop instead of inside on the perches. I tried blocking the roof with boards, adding more perches inside, even a fake plastic owl for two weeks. Finally I realized it was because the roof had a slight slope that felt safe to them, so I added a wire mesh angled at 45 degrees over it and they stopped overnight. Has anyone else dealt with a weird roosting spot that took forever to fix?

Did you try putting something slippery on the roof?

Well, have you actually tried something slippery yourself? I used to think grease on a metal roof sounded like asking for trouble, figured it would attract dirt or bugs or just make a mess. But after a neighbor put cooking spray around his skylight and it kept the moss from growing back, I changed my mind. He just used regular Pam and it worked like a charm, no sliding or staining. Now I'm thinking of doing the same around my chimney flashing instead of scrubbing it every spring.
